Kingdom of Piracy

RULE OUT : Autonomy takes up on OPENNESS

Shu Lea Cheang and Armin Medosch

-a proposal for a workout session - 2 hours minimum, sweatroom required

KOP <Kingdom of Piracy> has launched an R&D project on commons, tales and rules. http://kop.kein.org/commons/tales/ With this project we investigated different types of commons, both analogue and virtual, and arrived at the notion of a situated commons. By position ourselves in the situated commons, we reject the adoption of a universal commons which obeys to a single set of rules. As a continuation and extension of this research project we invite OpenCongress’ participants to join us in a workout session, ‘RULE OUT : Autonomy takes up on OPENNESS”. We want to review principles and rules of self-organisation, its probability and fall out in any given playground.

While jamming the keywords of open, commons, sharing, etc. we call for a review of the OPEN and FREE paradigm. Recalling Jo Freeman's "The Tyranny of Structurelessness" (1970) http://flag.blackened.net/revolt/hist_texts/structurelessness.html

We trace openness to 70s structurelessness in collective movements. We question the politics and power play masked in OPEN free trade and COMMONS cultural production. We have come a long way from the utopian dreams of the 60s, we refer to autonomy, not expect it on a nation, state or society level, but conducting it as operational degree of freedom in self-organization.

In the recent Spectre list debate, while the survival of media art institutions is debatable, we are seeing the sprouts of groups and small organizations, funded or not funded, striving along or going under. We call for those who work in or at the fringes of the art world, and who are allied with or involved in socio-utopian movements for our workout session. We want to investigate ways of being an invisible collective of subversive affirmationists, as pirates on the net, counter-collectivists. We question, how lasting can a freedom be that is only a freedom of the mind? Freedom needs material expression, an operational autonomy to be experienced differently. Can art provide at least models for such a type of autonomy which is material and operational?

RULE OUT : Autonomy takes on OPENNESS” sets out to:

(1) How, in practical sense, we create structures which have an operational independence and sustainability? Which are not subdued by the logic of buerocratic management, or by the the creative industries and consumerism, or by the autonomous art system of old?

(2) In the context of open source-diy, how do we appropriate, modify structures which are light, slim, cheap ... socio-technical systems which can repair themselves, travel, associate ...without suffering the ominous backlash that tends to hit those who insist on naive counter-cultural attitudes of old.

(3) In this session, we do not expect to set rules, rather we command a rule out exercise. Be open, be rude, be direct, what get ruled out when AUTONOMY takes up on OPENNESS?
